CUMMING — A Cumming resident has been appointed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Advisory Council. Fritz Wilson, executive director of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, will meet with the council’s other members several times a year to discuss current disasters and needed relief, as well as emergency preparedness. The SBDR is associated with the North American Mission Board and connects Southern Baptists with volunteer opportunities to help in disaster situations. Wilson has been volunteering with the organization for more than 20 years and has traveled around the country and the world to help the victims of “pretty much any disaster since 1996.” Those include 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He previously served as disaster relief and recovery director for the Florida Baptist Convention. Wilson said he is looking forward to offering his perspective on the council.“The biggest thing is being able to bring both my personal experience and knowledge and understanding of what’s needed to the respondent community, especially from a volunteer organization standpoint and a faith-based community standpoint,” he said. Wilson will be remaining in his position with the SBDR while he serves on the FEMA council.
