Forsyth County will begin seeking proposals for its 2014 grants to nonprofits starting this week. The social services committee met Friday to make final tweaks to the application for agencies seeking the funding. The committee, which formed in 2009, makes recommendations to the board of commissioners on annual grant funding for local nonprofits that work in some capacity with juvenile court. Once again, $435,000 has so far been budgeted for distribution in 2014. The agencies seeking grant funding must submit their applications between June 28 and July 31. The committee then will meet in late August to compare members’ scores on the nonprofit’s proposals. Those recommendations likely will be given to the county commission at its Sept. 10 work session. The application seeks information about how county funds would be used and how an agency serves children in the court system. New this year is a question asking about other ways a nonprofit receives assistance from the county, though the committee was unsure how or if this would factor in its decisions. The committee also expressed interest in adding a form allowing agencies to explain how a large cash savings has been earmarked for certain projects, an issue that has caused the group to question funding allotments in the past. The county will also send on June 28 its mid-year review forms, which seek to follow up on how awarded funding for 2013 is being used. Agencies receiving funding this year include: Bald Ridge Lodge, $75,000; Jesse’s House, $57,000; Court Appointed Special Advocates of Forsyth County, $35,000: Forsyth County Child Advocacy Center, $35,000; Mentor Me North Georgia, $20,000; Children's Center for Hope & Healing, $15,000; Supporting Adoption and Foster Families Together, $15,000; and Family Haven, $12,000. Also, the Department of Family and Children Services received $171,000.
