A Johns Creek man was arrested early Sunday morning following a car chase through nearly 20 miles of road in south Forsyth. Robert Johnson, 48, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of fleeing or attempting to elude for a felony offense and one count of second degree criminal damage to property.“The assault charges are based on the fact that he was aiming his car at our deputies [in their vehicles],” said sheriff’s office spokesman Douglas Rainwater. Four sheriff’s office patrol cars received “moderate” damaged in the pursuit, Rainwater said. The nearly 30-minute chase ended when Johnson crashed his Lexus GS450 into a fence in the Old Atlanta Commons subdivision. He “lost control” of the car while trying to avoid a deputy who blocked him in, Rainwater said. Johnson remained incarcerated at the Forsyth County Adult Detention Center as of late Monday on a bond of $20,100. The chase began at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday on McGinnis Ferry Road. A deputy noticed Johnson traveling about 25 mph in a 45 mph zone east toward Brookwood Road, according to a sheriff’s office report of the incident. The pursuit began as a low-speed chase, as Johnson reportedly “ignored” the deputy’s emergency lights and headed into Johns creek on Sargent Road before making a U-turn back to McGinnis Ferry. According to the report, Johnson picked up speed when he saw a second deputy at that intersection, heading west on McGinnis Ferry in excess of 90 mph. He drove at high speeds on Brookwood Road, Peachtree Parkway, Mathis Airport Parkway and Sharon Road before turning into Old Atlanta Commons, where he was stopped. After the car crashed into a fence behind a house, a deputy positioned his car to keep the Lexus from moving. The report states his foot continued to push down the accelerator as he was removed from the car.“I … asked him why did he choose not to stop and he told me that he did not know why,” the report states. “I could not smell any odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him, but he had a dazed look on his face.” No deputies were injured in the pursuit, which included several U-turns and special maneuvers intended to stop Johnson’s car.
