Authorities are searching this morning for a missing boater on Lake Lanier. Forsyth County Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Rick Doyle said the boat of a well-known fisherman was spotted going in circles about 10 p.m. Monday near Little Ridge Park in east Forsyth. State Department of Natural Resources officers found the unoccupied boat out of gas and with a cell phone on board, Doyle said. He added that it appears the man went overboard. According to Doyle, the family of the fisherman has asked that his name not be released yet while they notify relatives. Sgt. Greg Colson with the DNR said the family told authorities that it’s not unusual for the 47-year-old man to go out fishing at night. The search has so far involved helicopters, boats and sonar in clear conditions, he said.“We’ve been out since we received the call,” Colson said. Forsyth County Fire Div. Chief. Jason Shivers confirmed that the department is assisting in the search.“We’re providing manpower, marine units, sonar tools and divers if the need arises to perform an underwater search,” Shivers said. At last check, the search was continuing and diving had not begun.  Check back for updates at forsythnews.com or see the next edition of the Forsyth County News.
