FORSYTH COUNTY — Developers have been lined up to build two new Forsyth County schools. During its meeting Thursday night, the Board of Education awarded bids for the construction of Brandywine Elementary and Desana Middle schools. The schools are on Martin Drive and James Road, both in southwest Forsyth, and are anticipated to help ease crowding at some existing schools. The contract for Brandywine went to Charles Black Construction of Gainesville. The firm also built South Forsyth Middle and a portion of South Forsyth High. The total cost will be about $17.9 million.“Half of that is state reimbursement for money that we earned through the states capital outlay, and the rest are local funds,” said Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman for the district. The schools are scheduled to open for the 2016-17 school year. Brandywine will pull students from the districts of four existing elementary schools.“Redistricting will occur in fall 2015,” said Caracciolo, adding that the affected schools will be Big Creek, Midway, Shiloh Point and Vickery Creek. Construction of Desana will be handled by Evergreen Construction of Atlanta. It’s the company’s first contract with the school district.“Desana is $29,576,000, and it’s the same thing … some is from the state and some if local funding,” Caracciolo said. “The state amount it $10,949,105 and the local is 18,626,895.” The middle school will be near the elementary and will impact two middle schools, Piney Grove and Vickery Creek. In addition to using two different companies, the projects are being funded separately.“Brandywine is not a [2014 bond referendum] school,” Caracciolo said. “It is actually paid for from prior referendums. However, Desana is a bond project from the 2014 bond.”
