CUMMING — Those in need of a little Christmas spirit may want to check out the newest production on the Cumming Playhouse stage. Beginning Nov. 28, Gypsy Theatre Company presents its version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” While the tale is probably one of the most well-known stories in modern Western culture, the local show’s director, who goes only by the name Mercury, said this version will have its own unique twists.“I’ve adapted the book to the play, so there will be some different things,” he said. “But we’ve kept all the most well-known and beloved parts.” Set in Dickens’ 1850s London, the story traces the tale of one memorable Christmas Eve night in the life of Ebenezer Scrooge, an infamously cold-hearted miser. Through three special visitors, Scrooge is transformed into a new man. Since three spirits — the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future — play such an integral role in the story, Mercury said audiences can expect a few special effects as well as an intricate set with “some surprises.”“We do have a few tricks up our sleeves that I think audiences will really enjoy,” he said. “We’ll be bringing our unique viewpoint and the production values which Gypsy is known for to the show.” While this rendition of “A Christmas Carol” is not a “traditional musical,” according to Mercury, it will feature “many classic Christmas carols” sung by strong vocalists. In total, the cast includes more than 20 people, many of them children. Mercury said anyone seeking a little holiday spirit should make plans to see the show.“We hope everyone will come out and be reminded of what Christmas is really all about,” he said.
