CUMMING — It’s time to gear up for the annual Shoot and Ride Poker Run. Organized by the Sgt. David P. Land Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 82 in Cumming, the May 17 ride begins at Killer Creek Harley Davidson in Roswell and ends at the local lodge. The event began in 2001 as a benefit for the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes. But since 2003 it has honored Sgt. David Land, who died in a crash while responding to a call on his motorcycle.“This event is popular because many riders remember Sgt. Land and his winning attitude and smile,” said Karleen Chalker a ride committee member. “They ride because they remember how much David loved to be on a motorcycle, doing his job.“The ride honors the memory of a law enforcement officer who died in the line of duty. Most of all, it provides a way for people to help provide for his daughter who was left behind.” In addition to Land’s daughter, Taylor, ride proceeds also will go toward the children of any other law enforcement officers from the lodge who might lose their lives. Between Roswell and the lodge, riders will stop in at several businesses. At each stop, participants will draw a card by shooting it with Airsoft guns. Prizes will be awarded at the lodge, where chicken dinners will be available for purchase. Chalker said the motorcycle group with the highest shooting score will receive a trophy to be displayed at the lodge.
