GAINESVILLE — Original works by north Georgia artists are among the 100 juried pieces in the 36th annual Quinlan Visual Arts Center Fine Art Auction on Saturday in Gainesville. Gregory Johnson of Cumming is the featured guest artist at the gala, where one of his original sculptures will be up for auction. Johnson’s sculptures were most recently exhibited at the 2013 Art Basel event in Miami. He has created commissioned pieces throughout the United States, Canada and internationally for private foundations, municipalities and select Sculpture Walks. His most recent installation is the largest tiger in the country. Measuring 7 feet 6 inches tall and 14 feet long, this 2,200-pound Golden Tiger was welcomed to the campus of Brenau University in Gainesville  last year. Johnson has previously taught classes and exhibited at the Quinlan. Bill Davidson of Johns Creek provided his oil painting “Desirable Destination,” for the auction. Davidson had selected exhibitions at the Scottsdale Arizona Salon of Fine Art, Legacy Gallery in Bozeman, Jackson Hole, Wyoming’s National Wildlife Museum and Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas. Don Demers supplied his original oil work “Sunset at CCC.” Demers, a celebrated fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, painted on the shores of Lake Lanier in Gainesville during a workshop in fall 2013. His paintings have been featured in several publications, including American Artist magazine, Artist magazine, Plein Air magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, among others. Jay Kemp, a Gainesville native, gave his oil painting “Winter Sunset,” for the Quinlan Gala. Kemp is regarded among the foremost accomplished wildlife artists in the world, having been named the featured painter at the 31st annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in 2013 in Charleston, S.C. Kemp has received several accolades, including being named as an “artist to watch” by U.S. Art Magazine. The public may view the pieces during the Quinlan’s regular hours today through Saturday. The gala is set for Saturday at the center at 514 Green St. The black-tie dinner includes a silent and live auction. Proceeds from the auction directly fund Quinlan programming, including classes, exhibitions and community outreach. For ticketing and exhibiting artist information, contact the Quinlan at (770) 536-2575 or visit www.quinlanartscenter.org.
