CUMMING — Several workshops designed to help the public learn more about protecting local waterways will begin soon. Keep Forsyth County Beautiful, a division of Forsyth County government that seeks to improve beautification, litter reduction and recycling efforts, is offering a workshop series focusing on the Adopt-a-Stream program that starts Saturday. Kevin Smith, a KFCB community outreach specialist, said in a statement that the program “provides firsthand experience in monitoring these valuable water resources and helps to raise the public’s awareness of how crucial local water quality is to the environment.” The workshops are free and open to any county resident in third grade and older. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Smith at (678) 513-5892 or kdsmith@forsythco.com. Three different certifications — bacterial, biological and chemical — will be available through the two different workshops. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate from Georgia Adopt-A-Stream for each certification area achieved. This allows them to report water quality data for the Adopt-A-Stream program anywhere in the state. The first workshop, which will cover macro-invertebrate assessment, is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Central Park Recreation Center, 2300 Keith Bridge Road. During this workshop, attendees will learn how to collect, identify and count stream insects in order to access a stream’s quality. Additional sessions of the workshop will be offered: June 7 at Caney Creek Preserve, 2755 Caney Road; Aug. 9 at Cumming City Hall, 100 Main St.; and Oct. 4 at Windermere Park, 3355 Windermere Pkwy. The second in the series, focusing on chemical and bacterial certification, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 8 at the Central Park Recreation Center. Participants will learn how to perform basic chemical and bacterial samplings on local streams. Additional sessions of this workshop are set for: June 14 at Caney Creek Preserve; Aug. 16 at Cumming City Hall; and Oct. 11 at Windermere Park.
