Forsyth County has abandoned plans to work with local groups for an archery range and BMX course at the future Eagles Beak Park in northwestern Forsyth. The activities didn’t fit with the designated passive use for the park and the budget didn’t match the cost, according to District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills. The matter was discussed during the commission’s work session Tuesday afternoon. The BMX course may still be an option at the future Lanierland Parkin northeastern Forsyth, depending on the outcome of an upcoming feasibility study for use of the former concert venue. Difficulties in finding a legal entity for a memorandum of understanding with the archery club have halted progress on that use, according to county staff. Also during their work session, commissioners: * Set required membership to the county recreation centers, with associated fees, as recommended by the parks and recreation board. The measure is aimed at improving security by recording who enters the building and reducing crime by deterring those who aren’t visiting for legitimate reasons. The vote was 5-0, with Commissioner Brian Tam present by phone. * Agreed to take the first step in sponsoring a local business’ application for a state Department of Community Affairs employee incentive program loan. IUS Technologies, a south Forsyth firm, hopes to attain $500,000 through the loan, which its South Korean parent company would match for a $1 million expansion that would allow for research and development. The program puts the business on the hook to repay loan, but a government sponsor is required. * Approved a consulting agreement for support in aligning county software with business processes for optimal use and data retention management services. The contract lasts for up to one year, due to plans in place to possibly create a similar staff position in 2014. * Directed staff to move forward with reviewing a contract with Coast2Coast, a discount prescription drug program that covers all county residents. Forsyth County would receive $1.25 per prescription filled under the program, which is endorsed by the Association County Commissioners Georgia. * Authorized expending $87,500 from the fire fund reserves for emergency repairs at station 5, which had water leaking in. The work to waterproof the building will not disrupt service. * OK’d nearly $75,000 for emergency repairs on Oak Creek Crossing, where a metal pipe failed due to heavy rain and a leakage caused a section of road to cave in.
