The community is invited to celebrate a local mentoring organization Oct. 30 during the Magic Moments Breakfast.Known primarily for fostering one-on-one adult to child mentoring relationships, Mentor Me North Georgia has in recent years expanded to offer several other programs, including summer camps and after-school clubs. Sylvia Cardona, executive director, said the annual breakfast at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center celebrates all those who support the organization. “It’s for everybody who’s involved in our program, to celebrate their accomplishments of the year,” she said. “The reason we are successful is because of our volunteers and our donors and all the hours and support we get from the community at-large.” Mentor Me North Georgia, originally called Big Brothers/Big Sisters, was founded 10 years ago as a project of a Leadership Forsyth class.Through that program, each year’s class members develop a project that will leave a lasting legacy for the community in some way. “We’re especially grateful to Leadership Forsyth in both founding our organization and for the class of 2008, which started one of our programs, the Kick It Up Clubs,” Cardona said. Those clubs meet in area middle and high schools, using assistance from adults to inspire students who may be having difficulties at school. Cardona said Mentor Me has 55 one-on-one mentoring relationships and a waiting list of 17 students.“As always, most of them [on the waiting list] are boys, so we’re hoping to spark a challenge with the men so they will step up and enjoy being a mentor for a about an hour a week,” she said. Through all the organization’s programs, she added, more than 265 students have been assisted in some way so far this year. Anyone interested in attending the Magic Moments Breakfast is encouraged to register online at www.mentormenorthga.org by Friday, although payment will also be accepted at the door. Cost to attend is $15. Cardona said the breakfast will provide a glimpse into what Mentor Me is all about. “We’ll hear from some of our participants, some of the children and their parents,” she said. “We’ll also recognize our mentors of the year and some outstanding donors.“We’ll have a video and general updates for folks on what we’ve accomplished over the past decade and what we see going forward.”
